Many of the buildings recognised each year in the National Railway Heritage Awards are famous and have a fully documented history; others, however, are much more obscure. One of the latter was recognised in the awards announced in December 2018. This was the Engine Shed at Stirling entered by Historic Environment Scotland. Unlisted – and therefore under threat of demolition as part of the site’s redevelopment – the structure was constructed as a transit shed in the years before World War 1 as part of the Forthside military complex. Restored and extended by Historic Environment Scotland in order to create exhibition space and to provide a training facility for conservation staff, work was completed in June 2017. The quality of the work saw Historic Environment Scotland jointly awarded the Great Western Railway Craft Skills Award and, on 21 May 2019, the plaque recognising the award was formally unveiled by Lady Judy McAlpine.
