At the 2014 National Railway Heritage Awards, held in London on 3 December 2014, the work undertaken at Edinburgh Waverley by Network Rail covering the complete refurbishment of the station’s overall roof, the improved access to Market Street and other work in a £101 million project was marked by it achieving the Best Entry Award. One of the more unusual facets of the work was that the roof at Waverley is one of the few that can be seen both from below and, as a result of the station’s location in a cutting, from above and one of the features that both the judges and adjudicators noted, when identifying Waverley as a potential winner, was the success of the scheme in achieving an excellent view from both angles. On 28 April 2015 the plaque was officially unveiled by John Ellis, Chairman of the National Railway Heritage Awards, at Edinburgh Waverley station when a sizeable party gathered at the station to see the plaque unveiled and also to appreciate the significant improvement to one of Scotland’s premier railway stations as a result of this major investment.
